Navigating Power, Culture, and Ethics: Clinical Work with Narcissistic Abuse Survivors

What is this Workshop About?

Mental health professionals increasingly encounter clients experiencing narcissistic abuse and antagonistic relational stress (NA/ARS), yet our training often inadequately prepares us for the complex ethical, cultural, and systemic considerations these cases demand.

This comprehensive 6-hour workshop bridges the gap between traditional clinical frameworks and the nuanced reality of working with NA/ARS survivors whose experiences are deeply shaped by intersecting identities, power dynamics, and structural inequities.

Drawing from multicultural counseling competencies and trauma-informed care principles, participants will examine how power asymmetries within narcissistic relationships mirror and amplify broader societal inequities based on race, ethnicity, gender identity, sexual orientation, socioeconomic status, immigration status, and other marginalized identities.

The workshop challenges clinicians to move beyond individualistic treatment models toward socio-ecological approaches that honor clients' lived experiences within multiple, often oppressive systems.

Through case studies, reflective exercises, and practical application, clinicians will explore critical questions: How do collectivistic cultural values influence a client's capacity to leave an abusive relationship? When does "radical acceptance" become an inadequate response to systemic oppression? How do our own positionality and privilege shape our clinical judgments? What ethical obligations do we hold when clients face institutional barriers to safety and healing?

This workshop emphasizes clinician self-awareness, cultural humility, and the development of culturally adaptive interventions that account for the reality that many clients cannot simply "leave" or "change their thinking" when embedded in systems that limit their actual freedoms.

Participants will leave with practical frameworks for ethical treatment planning that honors both the acute distress of NA/ARS and the structural contexts that perpetuate it.

Hello, I am Dr. Debra Dantzler, the chief geek at G33ky Clinicians, LLC. I previously worked in residential drug and alcohol treatment. While I loved serving people in recovery, I often witnessed the pain and frustration experienced by their friends and family, who struggled to cope with their loved ones’ addiction. This inspired me to create a safe space for those impacted by the disease of addiction, many of whom were overachievers bearing the weight of being the family "hero" or "fixer." I understood their struggles with perfectionism and procrastination. Over my 30-year career in behavioral health,

I’ve earned a PhD in Human Services with a concentration in Addiction, become a Licensed Professional Counselor in Georgia, and achieved certifications as a Master Addiction Counselor and Board-Certified Counselor, mistakenly believing that accumulating credentials validated my worth.

I have since realized that my drive to control was rooted in my own need for connection and purpose and that true growth comes from letting go, setting boundaries, and embracing joy—a daily practice that continues to shape my life and work.

Objectives

  • Analyze the intersection of power, privilege, and narcissistic abuse by applying social-ecological and intersectional frameworks to case conceptualization, demonstrating understanding of how clients' marginalized identities interact with NA/ARS to create compounded trauma and limited behavioral options.
  • Evaluate personal positionality and implicit biases that influence clinical decision-making with NA/ARS clients, particularly regarding assumptions about gender roles, relationship dynamics, collectivistic versus individualistic cultural values, and clients' capacity for change within constrained circumstances.
  • Integrate culturally responsive and trauma-informed interventions that account for clients' actual resource access, systemic barriers, and cultural contexts, moving beyond individualistic "just leave" or "change your cognitions" approaches toward treatment plans grounded in cultural humility and realistic goal-setting.
  • Identify ethical considerations and institutional limitations when working with NA/ARS clients navigating systems (family court, immigration, healthcare, workplace) that may not recognize emotional abuse, while maintaining appropriate professional boundaries and recognizing the distinction between clinical and advocacy roles.

General Refund Policy
The general refund policy states that refunds for live webinars or live workshops will be honored if cancellations are received at least five (5) days prior to the event. However, refunds will not be issued for On-Demand (Asynchronous) webinars, as participants have immediate access to all materials upon purchase. Additionally, refunds will not be issued due to technical limitations of the participant. Payments made via Credit Card will have a three percent credit card fee deducted from the refund, while cash or check payments are not subject to these fees. It is important to note that last-minute cancellations, including those due to emergencies or unforeseen circumstances, will result in the forfeiture of all money paid for the workshop.

If you are unable to attend a live workshop, you may roll your "credit" towards a future workshop.

Weather Cancellation Policy
For live (in-person) workshops, the policy states that they will take place on the specified date and time unless a "State of Emergency" is declared for greater than 50% of the State of Georgia, including Dekalb and Fulton counties. In such cases, the workshop will be rescheduled to a future date, and a monetary credit will be transferred from the original date to the newly rescheduled date. Refunds will not be given for any weather-related events.

ADA Requests
The organization will make every effort to accommodate any reasonable ADA (Americans with Disabilities Act) request. Participants are required to call at least two weeks prior to the event to make the necessary arrangements. Payment and registration are also required to fulfill an ADA request.

CE Certificate Replacement Fee
If participants fail to obtain or misplace their CE (Continuing Education) certificate for any workshop offered by the organization, they have one year to request a replacement certificate free of charge. However, if the request is made for a workshop held more than one year after the date of the workshop, a $20.00 CE certificate replacement fee will be imposed and must be paid in full prior to receiving the replacement certificate.

Returned Check Fee
In the event that a personal or business check used to pay for a workshop is returned for any reason (e.g., insufficient funds, account closed), there will be a $35.00 returned check fee.

Complaint or Grievance
If participants have a complaint or grievance, they are encouraged to contact the organization directly via email or phone during business hours. The organization strives to offer the best possible customer service and will make every effort to address and resolve any issues.
