Beyond Theory: An Integrative Approach toCouples Therapy - Practical Tools fromGottman, EFT, and Intensive Models

What is this Workshop About?

Most effective couples therapists aren't purists in a single model—they're integrative practitioners who synthesize evidence-based approaches into their clinical work.

This workshop provides practical tools and frameworks drawn from the presenter's experience facilitating 50+ couples intensives and training in Gottman Method, Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT), Imago Relationship Therapy, and Relational Life Therapy.

Participants will learn how to structure couples sessions effectively, identify and interrupt reactive cycles, facilitate emotional regulation, implement structured dialogue techniques, and apply specific interventions for common couples issues.

The focus is on practical integration: what actually works in the therapy room and how to weave multiple evidence-based tools into your existing practice.

Whether you're new to couples work or looking to expand your clinical toolkit, you'll leave with concrete interventions you can implement immediately.

Speaker

William Hemphill LPC

William Hemphill, LPC has facilitated 50+ couples intensives—immersive 2.5 to 4-day therapy experiences for couples in crisis—and brings over a decade of specialized training in couples therapy, including Gottman Method (Level 1), Emotionally Focused Therapy (EFT externship), EMDR (completing certification December 2025), and intensive couples therapy models. A Licensed Professional Counselor with an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University, he owns Faith and Family Empowerment, a therapy practice in the Atlanta area specializing in couples therapy and spiritual trauma treatment.

Prior to his clinical career, William completed five units of Clinical Pastoral Education (2,000+ clinical hours) and served as a Board Certified Chaplain (2007-2012), providing care to over 1,300 patients and families in hospital and hospice settings including Emory Center for Pastoral Services, Wesley Woods, Children's Healthcare of Atlanta, and DeKalb Medical Center. This background in crisis intervention and end-of-life care informs his work with couples navigating high-conflict dynamics and attachment injuries.

William holds a B.S. in Electrical Engineering from Georgia Tech, an M.Div. from Emory University, and an M.S. in Mental Health Counseling from Georgia State University.

His diverse background—11 years as a lead engineer at Nortel Networks and over a decade of clinical work—gives him a unique ability to integrate analytical thinking and therapeutic expertise.

He is the author of Praying with Your Spouse (2017) and The Confidence Walk (2025). A member of the National Speakers Association and Toastmasters-certified speaker, William has presented at the Wise Practice Summit and the AGPA Conference.
